There
are no universally recognized standards for grading Vintage Magazine
Advertising. Grandfather's Legacy has proposed and published
the
following chart of standards and definitions - simple to apply and easy
to understand. These standards are used in all our listings.

Standards
Grandfather's
Legacy carefully examines each vintage print advertisement under
controlled conditions. Grading decisions are made using the criteria
outlined below:
Mint - Perfect.
(We never assign this rating)
Near Mint - Almost
perfect. Very light aging
Very Fine - Clean
and fresh. Minor wear. No creases, tears, folds, stains or damage
Fine - Allowed
one noticeable minor flaw such as a curled corner or tiny crease. If a
cover, a label is accepted only if clean, neat and tight. Very minor,
almost unnoticeable fading or yellowing allowed. Nice!
Excellent - Carefully
handled a few times. Two or three minor flaws. Some fading or yellowing
accepted. Still very nice
Very Good - Several
small flaws and moderate fading or yellowing allowed. A very small edge
tear or two is accepted. Small areas of moisture wrinkling O.K. Still
desirable. Still collectible
Good - Some
substantial flaws. Nothing catastrophic. Still readable
Fair - Large
tears, stains or holes. Excessive wear, aging or brittleness
Poor - Beat
up. Discolored. Almost unrecognizable |
Be Gentle!
Experienced
collectors understand this, but on the chance that you are new to this
very rewarding avocation, let us caution against unrealistic
expectations. Some very desireable and collectable advertisements were
printed before we were born! Minor indications of age may not be all
that bad. Our grading system, for instance, marks down for yellowing,
but a little bit of yellowing or fading is sometimes thought desirable
as a visual indication of age. You will not find any copies or reprints
here! Every item is original. Each advertisement is what it is, and a
duplicate may be difficult or impossible to find.
